Your furry friends deserve delicious food made with real ingredients! Making your own dog food might seem like a time-consuming task, but with the use of a slow cooker, it’s actually as easy as can be. High-quality chicken parts from Bell & Evans, like Chicken Gizzards, roughly chopped, and ground chicken provide the nutrition your pup needs, with chicken flavor they will love!

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Mix gizzards, ground breast meat, thighs, water, beans, sweet potatoes and carrots together in a 8-quart slow cooker until combined. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours, or low for 8 hours until chicken is fully cooked.
  2. Break ground breast meat up into small crumbles with a wooden spoon. Stir in apples and let cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes. Transfer to an airtight container or resealable plastic bag and keep refrigerated or frozen up to 2 weeks until ready to serve.

To use as a Topper for Kibble

  1. Use only 1 Sweet Potato, 1 Apple and 3 lb. of protein, but use 8 cups of water.

I make this for my dogs every week and top their biscuits with it. A crockpot full will last a whole week for 7 dogs. I prefer using the BSO Legs, Gizzards and 1 lb. of chicken burger. I also substitute butternut squash or pumpkin for the sweet potato if it’s in season. Pumpkin is terrific for a dog’s gut health.

Hey, can I please clarify what 1 Pkg is? Is it one package? How many grams/pounds is that please? I am based in the UK and have some chicken gizzards I bought specifically for dog so wanted to make this recipe x

    1. 1 Pkg of Gizzards would be 1 lb. Let us know how it turns out. Trust us, your furry friend will love it!

Can you tell me how many cups this yields? It says it serves 14 but I don’t know what that means. I have two dogs who combined weigh 170 lbs.

        1. Hi Kim, we apologize for the delay. This recipe should yield roughly 6 quarts of dog food.

Hi, my dog doesn’t like gizzards so we are just using chicken thighs, breast meat baby beans and carrot. Smelled really nice 🙂 and my dog kept to the kitchen smelling the air and whinging. OMG he just gobbled this up and is licking his bowl clean 🙂

I made this for the first time today. To the meats I added some green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli and apples. It smelled so good cooking and my Lab and Australian Shepherd love it.

What do I do with all the leftover water? Do I just strain out all the meat, veggies and fruit? My dogs are going to love this!!
