Most of us are glad to leave 2020 behind and look forward to what 2021 may bring. Bell & Evans is no exception. We began construction last year on a new chicken harvesting facility, a project that was in the works for years. It will be completed by December, replacing our existing harvesting plant until upgrades there can be made. 100% of our chickens will pass through our new, state-of-the-art facility. Excited is an understatement. Out with the old, in with the NEW!

You will be hearing a lot about our new plant this year. Every material used, process designed, and machinery purchased was meticulously selected to achieve superior quality, sustainability, efficiency, traceability, safety, and humane handling of our chickens.

Our 100% Air Chill process, first adopted in 2005, will be upgraded and a new system installed. Same with our humane Slow Induction Anesthesia (SIA) process we innovated in 2011. Rest assured that nothing will be lost and so much more gained with our new facility!

One upgrade we are most excited about is a new humane handling measure that eliminates the use of fork trucks to off-load drawers of chickens into the building. The smooth transition will further minimize stress on our birds. This will be the first automated transport system in North America. Not only are we continuously improving animal welfare, but this level of traceability we are gaining with the new technology and data, from bird collection on the farm to processing, is unheard of in the U.S.

I feel very fortunate to be where I am today, doing what we are doing. I’m a lifelong chicken guy, and this new harvesting plant is my dream come true. I can’t wait to share it with you.

To our local community watching the new facility being built and our loyal customers interested in what we are up to, I promise to provide regular updates through my blog. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, Happy New Year to you and yours.
